My Kind of Easter

Updated: Apr 29

I always know when Easter’s coming. The air gets warmer, I get to go outside more, and people just seem happier. That’s how it starts.

When I was younger, it was the decorations that gave it away. Little bunnies, colorful baskets, and my favorite—the ceramic eggs Mom made herself—would pop up all over the house. She’d put them in all the usual places, and I’d go around checking every one, just soaking it all in. But the biggest clue of all was the plastic tablecloth. Once that crinkly thing went on the kitchen table, I knew it was go time.

This was the best part. Mom would bring out all the bowls, and Dad would get the dye ready—tiny bottles in every color you can imagine. My brother, my sister, and I would all wear old white T-shirts (Mom would NOT be happy if we stained our nice clothes!), and I’d climb into a kitchen chair right next to them, ready to join in. I always liked watching first. I wanted to see the colors, hear them say “ooh” and “ahh.” Then when it was my turn, Dad’s big hands would help guide my little ones as I dipped the wand into the dye. He always let me take my time, swirling the egg around until the color was justttt right. We made sure mine turned out EXTRA special. And they always did. Not gonna lie—mine were the best. (But don’t tell Michael or Dawnie that!)

When we were done, we’d pick our favorites to give to PaMa and Papa—our grandparents. I always chose the prettiest ones for them, and I could tell they loved them from their smiles. Giving them something I made with my own hands made me SO proud.

But the Easter Bunny? That’s what sent me into full excitement mode. That Easter bunny just gets me. Every year, he hides gifts for me all over the house. He hides ‘em good too! I have to look everywhere—under chairs, near the couch, by the stairs. Every time I find one, I cannot contain my excitement. I mean, the gifts are just the best. You name it…we’ve got banana pudding, Jello cups, shampoo, apple juice, bubbles for my bath, soft leggings, cozy sweatshirts. It’s like he knows exactly what I love!

Easter has always been my favorite holiday. The decorations, the colors, the family, the surprises—every bit of it. My family makes sure I’m part of the fun in EVERY way! I love the memories. I love the traditions. I love that even now, Easter still feels like something magical is happening just for me.
